Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles (Káposztás Tészta)

Ingredients

  • 12 oz (350 g) egg noodles or wide pasta
  • 1 small head green cabbage, shredded
  • 2–3 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped (optional but traditional)
  • 1–2 tsp salt (to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (optional, for slight caramel flavor)

Instructions

  1. Cook the noodles in salted water until tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pan, heat oil or butter over medium heat.
  3. Add onion (if using) and cook until soft and golden.
  4. Add shredded cabbage, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  5. Cook for 20–30 minutes, stirring often, until the cabbage is soft and lightly caramelized.
  6. Mix the cooked cabbage with the noodles.
  7. Adjust seasoning and serve warm.
