Gombóc (Hungarian Plum Dumplings)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg potatoes (boiled, peeled, mashed, cooled)
  • 1 egg
  • 200–250 g all-purpose flour (as needed)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 10–15 plums (fresh, pitted)
  • 10–15 sugar cubes or 1–2 tsp sugar per plum
  • 100 g breadcrumbs
  • 3–4 tbsp butter
  • 2–3 tbsp sugar
  • Cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes, peel, mash, and let cool completely.
  2. Mix potatoes with egg, salt, and flour to form a soft dough.
  3. Roll dough on a floured surface and cut into squares.
  4. Place a plum (with sugar inside) in each square and wrap into a dumpling.
  5. Boil salted water and cook dumplings until they float, then cook 2–3 more minutes.
  6. In a pan, melt butter and toast breadcrumbs until golden.
  7. Roll cooked dumplings in the toasted breadcrumbs.
  8. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon if desired.
