🇭🇺 Hungarian Krémes (Custard Slice)

🧾 Ingredients:

For the layers:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry

For the custard filling:

  • 1 liter milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 150 g sugar
  • 100 g cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the meringue (optional but traditional):

  • 6 egg whites
  • 100 g sugar

For topping:

  • Powdered sugar

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Bake pastry:
    Roll out puff pastry and bake two sheets separately at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes until golden. Let cool.

  1. Make custard:
    Heat milk in a pot.
  2. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla.
  3. Slowly pour hot milk into the mixture while stirring, then return everything to the pot.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and smooth.

  1. Prepare meringue (optional):
    Beat egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add sugar and beat until stiff.
  2. Gently fold the meringue into the hot custard for a lighter texture.

  1. Assemble:
    Place one pastry sheet in a pan.
  2. Spread the warm custard evenly.
  3. Place the second pastry sheet on top.

  1. Chill:
    Refrigerate for at least 3–4 hours until set.
