🇭🇺 Hungarian Walnut Bars – Dióhabos Sütemény

🧾 Ingredients:

For the base:

  • 200 g all-purpose flour
  • 100 g butter (cold, cubed)
  • 80 g sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

For the walnut topping:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 120 g sugar
  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prepare the base:
    In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add cold butter and rub until crumbly.
  3. Add egg yolks and vanilla, then knead into a smooth dough.

  1. Bake base:
    Press dough evenly into a lined baking pan.

🔥 Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes until lightly golden.


  1. Make walnut topping:
    Beat egg whites until foamy.
  2. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.
  3. Fold in ground walnuts, vanilla, and lemon zest.

  1. Assemble & bake:
    Spread walnut mixture over the pre-baked base.

🔥 Return to oven and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden.


  1. Let cool completely, then cut into bars.
