Beef Mechado (Filipino Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef chuck or brisket, sliced
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth or water
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp calamansi or lemon juice
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 2 potatoes, cubed
  • 1 carrot, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pot. Sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  2. Add beef, season with pepper, cook until lightly browned.
  3. Pour in tomato sauce, soy sauce, calamansi/lemon juice, bay leaves, and broth.
  4. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 1–1½ hours until beef is tender.
  5. Add potatoes and carrots. Cook 10–15 minutes until vegetables are soft.
  6. Season with salt and sugar if needed.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice.
