Gombóc (Hungarian Plum Dumplings) 🇭🇺

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt

Filling

  • 8–10 small plums, pitted
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon

Coating

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes until tender. Peel and mash, then cool.
  2. Mix potatoes with egg, salt, and flour to form a soft dough.
  3. Roll dough out and cut into squares.
  4. Place a plum in each square and fill center with sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Wrap dough around plums and seal tightly.
  6. Boil in salted water until dumplings float, then cook 3–4 minutes more.
  7. Toast breadcrumbs in butter until golden.
  8. Roll cooked dumplings in breadcrumbs.
