These delicate Hungarian crescent cookies are a cherished holiday tradition. Filled with sweet walnut filling and dusted generously with powdered sugar, Hókifli are tender, buttery, and perfect for Christmas celebrations.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tbsp sour cream
- 1 pinch salt
For the Walnut Filling:
- 1 cup (100 g) ground walnuts
- ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Finishing:
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the egg yolk and sour cream, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- Wrap the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Meanwhile, prepare the filling by mixing the ground walnuts, sugar, milk, and vanilla until combined.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about ⅛ inch (3 mm) thickness.
- Cut into small circles or squares.
- Place a small amount of walnut filling in the center of each piece and roll into crescent shapes.
- Arrange on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Let cool slightly, then generously dust with powdered sugar.
