Hungarian Mushroom Paprika Recipe – Culinary Hungary

Hungarian Mushroom Paprikash (Gombapaprikás)

Ingredients

  • 500 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1–2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt (to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried dill or 2 tbsp fresh dill
  • 1 cup (240 ml) sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • ½ cup water or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat butter or oil in a pan and sauté onion until soft.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Add mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and soften.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in paprika quickly.
  5. Add salt, pepper, dill, and a little water or broth. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Mix sour cream with flour until smooth.
  7. Stir a few spoonfuls of hot sauce into the sour cream mixture, then return it to the pan.
  8. Simmer gently for 3–5 minutes (do not boil).
  9. Add lemon juice if desired.

Serving

Serve hot with:

  • Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings)
  • Rice or pasta
  • Boiled potatoes
