Hungarian Pörkölt (Hearty Stew) 🇭🇺

📝 Ingredients:

  • 500 g (1 lb) beef, pork, or chicken, cut into cubes
  • 2 tbsp lard or oil
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • 2–3 tomatoes, chopped (or 1 tbsp tomato paste)
  • 1–2 bell peppers, chopped
  • 1–2 cups water or broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

🥣 Instructions:

  1. Heat lard or oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and cook until soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in garlic and paprika (remove from heat briefly to avoid burning paprika).
  4. Add meat and brown on all sides.
  5. Add caraway seeds, salt, and pepper.
  6. Mix in tomatoes and bell peppers.
  7. Pour in a little water or broth, just enough to cover the meat.
  8. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1.5–2 hours until the meat is tender and sauce thickened.
  9. Adjust seasoning before serving.
