
Hungarian Sour Cherry Cake
🧾 Ingredients
For the batter:
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup (150 g) sugar
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the filling:
- 2 cups (300 g) sour cherries (fresh or jarred, pitted)
- 2 tbsp sugar (adjust depending on tartness)
- 1 tbsp flour or breadcrumbs (to absorb juice)
For topping (optional):
- Powdered sugar
- Lemon zest or cinnamon

👨🍳 Instructions
1. Prepare the cherries
- If using jarred cherries, drain them well.
- Toss cherries with sugar and a little flour or breadcrumbs.
- Set aside.
2. Make the batter
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light.
- Add oil (or butter), milk, and vanilla.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until smooth.
3. Assemble
- Grease a baking pan (about 9×13 inch / 20×30 cm).
- Pour batter into the pan.
- Spread cherries evenly on top (they will slightly sink).
4. Bake
- Bake for 30–40 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool.
🍽️ Serving
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving
- Cut into squares and enjoy warm or at room temperature 😋
