🐟 Hungarian Fish Soup (HalĂĄszlĂ©)

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg freshwater fish (carp preferred, cut into pieces)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 onions (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tomato (chopped)
  • 1 bell pepper (chopped)
  • 1–2 cloves garlic (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • œ tsp black pepper
  • 1–1.5 liters water
  • 1 tsp hot paprika or chili (optional, for heat)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large pot and sauté onions until soft.
  2. Remove from heat, stir in paprika quickly (don’t burn it).
  3. Add tomato, bell pepper, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour in water and bring to a boil.
  5. Add fish pieces and simmer gently for 30–40 minutes (do not stir too much).
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning; add hot paprika if desired.
  7. Serve hot with bread.
